As part of the Cheltenham town centre Neighbourhood Coordination Group, which is coordinated by CWEP, we are leading a project action group to transform the Cheltenham Minster St Mary’s grounds into a green oasis to be enjoyed by residents and visitors.
Cheltenham Minster, more commonly known as St Mary’s church, is located between the High Street and Clarence Street and is close to the Wilson Art Gallery and Museum and Boots corner.
Built in the 12th century the church is the oldest and only surviving medieval building in Cheltenham. It is a beautiful building and its location right in the centre of town provides a fantastic opportunity to create an attractive multi use green space.
The action group, which is made up of residents, businesses, the church and relevant agencies has produced a plan which will provide seating, improved planting and outside performance space. The plans also include community art projects. The whole scheme will cost in excess of £250,000 and we are currently in the fundraising phase of the project.
In August 2013 a Minster Merriment event in the churchyard enabled us to consult with a wider section of the community and plans met with wide approval. Another Minster Merriment event will be held this year.
